How to Get a Grade 9 in GCSE Science: Tips From a Top Student

Mark schemes, exam practice and revision habits that actually work, straight from a Grade 9 student.

August 28, 2023 · By Arushi Dubey

GCSE Science can be difficult, but with the correct preparation you will be able to get those grade 8s and 9s. Below are a few tips on how to do exactly that, coming from a Grade 9 student. Whether you take the Combined or Triple course, and whether you study in Dubai or anywhere else in the world, these strategies apply to Biology, Chemistry and Physics alike.

1

Go Over GCSE Mark Schemes

Going over mark schemes and improving your exam technique is the key to securing those top grades. You may have all the knowledge you need, but without the correct exam technique, getting the marks (especially on those 3 to 4 mark questions) will be incredibly difficult. By studying mark schemes, you will realise that examiners typically only want a few key points. They do not need a long paragraph or a winding explanation. If you have the correct answer, written in bullet points, you are bound to get the marks. Writing your answers this way, especially for the 6 markers, makes it a lot easier for examiners to award you marks.

2

Practise, Practise, Practise

The phrase "practice makes perfect" is especially true in this case. The more you practise, for example by working through live exam questions after covering new content in any of the three sciences, the more improvement you will see in your science skills. Going over exam questions also helps you secure your knowledge and identify any gaps in your learning. This is because exam questions require you to apply what you know. If you find you are unable to do so, it is a clear indication that you need to go over the new content again.

3

Start Your GCSE Revision Early

It is important to read about what you will be learning in an upcoming class beforehand. This allows you to gain a sound understanding first, then secure it during the lesson with your teacher. When GCSE season arrives, make sure you start revising well before your actual exams: spend time going over challenging topics and make detailed notes you can use later on.

4

Ask for Support

Asking for help causes no harm, and is in fact incredibly helpful. By asking your teachers for guidance as soon as you need it, you allow yourself to stay on the right pathway. Delaying asking for support does you no favours, and may be compromising your overall GCSE Science results. Your teachers and tutors are there to help you, so make sure you fully understand that and ask them for assistance whenever you feel the need to.

The Bottom Line

Top grades in GCSE Science come down to smart habits: learn how examiners award marks, practise applying your knowledge, start revision early, and ask for support the moment you need it. If you would like one-to-one help with any of this, an IGCSE tutor in Dubai or an online tutor anywhere in the UAE can work through mark schemes and past papers with you. Build these habits into your routine now and those grade 8s and 9s are well within reach. Good luck!
